GFMD Dialogue on GCM Implementation at the Palais des Nations in Geneva

This dialogue follows a series of initiatives that began since Germany and Morocco assumed the GFMD Co-Chairmanship in 2017. It is part of the effort of the GFMD to accompany the evolving GCM process and encourage Member States to develop their perspectives on the future of international cooperation on migration.

GFMD Dialogue on the Global Compact for Migration Implementation Event

The event on the 4th September will be the first global gathering of migration and development stakeholders after the GCM Draft was finalized.

The dialogue is envisaged as a critical step leading to the Eleventh GFMD  summit on 5-7 December 2018.

In addition to the inter-governmental conference to adopt the Global Compact on 10-11 December, both in Marrakesh.

This event presents the first opportunity for Member States to reflect collectively on how the  Global Forum on Migration and Development could help translate the GCM commitments into action. In addition, to prepare themselves to work together to plan their responses to the challenges and opportunities they have agreed to in the GCM.

The outcomes of this day-long dialogue will inform the Future of the Forum session to be held in Marrakesh on 7 December 2018.

GFMD Dialogue on the Global Compact for Migration Implementation 4th September aims and objectives

To promote a collective understanding of the implications, challenges and opportunities for the GFMD of the final GCM draft released on 11 July 2018
To harness GFMD’s multi-stakeholder space and innovative approaches to support Member States in the implementation, follow up and review of the GCM commitments
To discuss how GFMD could foster institutional and thematic linkages with the proposed UN network on migration to be coordinated by IOM Ref

 

What is the Global Forum on Migration and Development?

The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) is an initiative of the United Nations Member States. It has been created in order to address the migration and development interconnections in practical and action-oriented ways. Essentially, it is a voluntary and government-led process, that is informal and non-binding.

What are the objectives of the Global Forum on Migration and Development?

To provide a venue for policy-makers and high-level policy practitioners to informally discuss relevant policies and practical challenges and opportunities of the migration-development nexus, and engage with other stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, experts and migrant organizations to foster practical and action-oriented outcomes at national, bilateral and international level;

To exchange good practices and experiences, which can be duplicated or adapted in other circumstances, in order to maximize the development benefits of migration and migration flows;

To identify information, policy and institutional gaps necessary to foster synergies and greater policy coherence at national, regional and international levels between the migration and development policy areas;

To establish partnerships and cooperation between countries, and between countries and other stakeholders, such as international organizations, diaspora, migrants, academia etc., on migration and development;

To structure the international priorities and agenda on migration and development. Ref
