It has been estimated that 30,971 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe between January and April 2018 according to DTM data. These figures represent a 39% decrease to the 50,400 registered figures for January to April 2017.

What are registered figures?

Registered figures are discussed in relation to people of concern. Host states are responsible for the registration of refugees. Essentially, the recording, verifying and keeping of up to date information on persons of concern is aimed at protecting the people involved.

In addition, it aims to add to how durable solutions are implemented for them. Persons of concern in this instance encompasses asylum seekers, returning refugees, returnees, resettled refugees, stateless and internally displaced persons who are of concern.

Registration is seen as the initial stage where a formal protection relationship is developed between a government and or the UNHCR and the refugee seeker. In addition, it allows a refugee to avail of the protection or assistance they need that can be provided by the government and or UNHCR.
